This title was released today from SLG Publishing (comics).
This isn't a plug for it, it's just that, ya gotta see this book.
Simply because the artwork is amazingly just like Mr Templesmith's.
It's black and white but, looks like it uses the same techniques.
Tentacled monsters, wirey characters, spooky backgrounds...
right down to the reflective shine on people wearing spectacles.
Ya'd swear Mr. Templesmith was using an alias on this book.
The artwork is credited to a Drew Rausch. The story by Dan Vado.
About a cursed house and the women (or spirit) that lives within.

Creepy.

Scroll down til you see the "Independents" banner of releases,
then, under Amaze Ink/Slave Labor Graphics
hit the title "Sarah Winchester #1"

Saw it today at my store. Pretty blatant rip off of style there.

I don't know how people do that and pass themselves off as anything other than a punk bitch.

Also if you can ape someone so thuroughly, you can probably draw pretty well on your own. Oh well.

Doesn't that guy post here?

edit: looked for myself....he does. His Sullengrey stuff looks far more original and he definitely has talent....not sure about that cover though(haven't seen inside the book).

He does? Well shame on him. What the fuck? It's fucking blatant.

It's one thing to have influence, it's a whole other to ape. Shows a blatant disregard for the talent of the person you're ripping off. Especially when it's someone who's style is so specific and individual. Just takes away from what they do.

Oh well, not my problem. I just won't buy it.

Now...let's relax a little here....

Just because Drew Rauch has SOME art styles similar to those of
Ben Templesmith's, hardly justifies saying he's "rip[ping] off" another
artist. And, a "punk bitch"?...I mean, c'mon. Really? How old are we?
We're fans of Mr. Templesmith's artwork. This Rauch guy pro'lly is, as
well. And most artists who see there influence in the work of others
consider it a compliment. I don' wanna speak for Mr Templesmith,
but, i'd figure he'd be flattered by it.
Plus, who knows if Mr Rauch hasn't been drawin like this for as many
as Mr Templesmith has?

If we thought of this in a negative way, then half the artists who have or
haven't made a name for themselves already, would be in court. Look
at some of the Golden and Silver age artists of comics. It's influence.
That's all.
Now, if the guy starts usin color, and Photoshop or Illustrator the same
way Templesmith does, then i think we have license TO HUNT HIM DOWN
KILL HIM LIKE THE DOG HE IS!!! Wink

It devalues the originality of the artist being copied. And if you can look at that book and say it's just influence and not a blatant copy of Ben's work, well... good for you. I can't.

If I saw someone ape my style so thuroughly I'd be offended. Granted, my style is hardly as definitive as Ben's.

And this guy's drawn other books in other styles. I've never seen anything from him that looks like this. You can call it what you like, I just think it's lame.

Let's all go rip off his other work and see how he likes it.

I'm not mad at the guy, and sorry if I've been offensive; I've never held the popular opinion, or my tounge. But I think this is lame. Sorry.

Also he posts here and you can see a lot of his older work which doesn't look like this. You can see the influence start to sneek in... and apparently take over.

r_sail, I admire your honesty! Truly!
I just don't wanna see somethin like this ruin your day.

And he does recommend Ben Templesmith on his blog
and site him, among others, as an influence.

Not that you care, but, does the guy really post here?

Yeah it's pretty clearly a rip on Templesmiths style. I saw this comic in my local and was about to buy it before noticing that it wasn't templesmith. It seems to me that he used a style that was doing quite well for itself and decided to use it because of the creepy context of the comic the art was for. That seems like a rip to me. .................... And hey again guys. just got back from travelling so i've been away from the interwebs.
